Rotator Cuff Disease of the Shoulder

Robert H. Cofield, M.D.

ABSTRACT
Rotator cuff disease is extremely common and important. In every analysis of muscle and tendon ruptures, the supraspinatus has been the most frequent site of rupture or has been near the top of the list. Codman emphasized the importance of rotator cuff disease to industry and many authors detailed the time lost from work and the socioeconomic implications of this injury or its treatment.
We have slowly accumulated knowledge about the rotator cuff, including its contribution to shoulder function, the genesis of disease , the spectrum of disease presentation, the results ofnon-operative care, and the methods and results of surgical repair. Newly discovered related entities have been described (cuff tear arthropathy and the Milwaukee shoulder), and new advances are being made in the treatment of the unsolved problem of the larger tendon tear.
